|This Ganesh Chaturthi, lets join hands together to promote Green Celebration with MIVDO App |
Ganesh Chaturthi is celebrated annually to mark the birth of Lord Ganesha, the God of new beginnings and a fresh start. The festival falls in the month of Bhadra, according to the Hindu calendar and in August/September according to the Gregorian calendar. Lord Ganesha is considered to be a symbol of wisdom, writing, travel, commerce and good fortune. He is also addressed as Gajanana, Ganesh, Gajadant that are among his 108 names.
The significance of this festival, as our elders point out for us every time, has been etched on our minds. The open-heartedness with which Ganesha is embraced and the melancholic happiness with which he is sent to his parents make this event all the more cherished in every heart. But it is equally necessary to understand how while celebrating this deemed festival, each community has to take care of the quintessence and spirit of the same. It is our moral duty to acknowledge the fact that Ganesh Chaturthi, observed for this God who is believed to protect, safeguard and bring prosperity into all lives, is not to be commemorated as a means of disregarding everything he stands for.
The basic idea is to respect the environment, our Creator has so very beautifully and delicately crafted. Unfortunately, festivals today have become highly commercialized and more than spread joy, festivities end up choking and polluting cities and its water bodies, with noisy crackers, loudspeakers and the use of toxic materials.
The havoc can squarely be blamed on the lack of awareness among the general population. So let’s make an effort to have pollution-free festivals this year and celebrate an eco-friendly Ganesh Chaturthi so as to bring minimum or no harm to the environment.
Awareness on Green Ganesh or Eco-friendly Ganesh|
Understand the concept of the Ganesh festival in its true sense and its effects on our Mother Nature. More and more eco friendly ways should be developed and awareness should be spread among people. Prizes should be distributed to communities who promote eco friendly ways of celebrating festivals which will encourage others. Posters and videos can be shown among apartments sharing knowledge about eco friendly ways. Awareness drives and workshops should be conducted.
Light eco-friendly crackers|
Smoke emitted from commercial fire crackers has the potential to cause serious lung problems, especially among children and animals. Eco-friendly crackers are made up of recycled paper and the sound produced by these crackers is under the decibel limit defined by the Pollution Board.
Buy/Make eco-friendly idols|
From Clay, Chocolate, gobar, alum, sugar cane and sprouts, there are various eco-friendly options available in the market today. You could even make your own idol rather than buy one, there are some good Youtube tutorials that can teach you to make chocolate and other eco-friendly Ganesh idols.
Avoid the use of plastic and Thermocol for the idol’s stage and decor|
The stage is mostly decorated using thermocol or plastic, you can replace these with biodegradable materials like cardboard and handmade recycled paper. Also, using garlands made of fresh flowers to adorn the idols instead of plastic ones can reduce chocking marine life and water bodies. Decorate the venue with reusable items or biodegradable materials like cloth, paper, decorative plants and leaves, bamboo, etc. Use natural colours such as turmeric, henna, rice powder and gulaal for making rangoli.
Avoid blaring music on loudspeakers|
Noise-induced hearing loss is irreversible. Avoid bursting noisy firecrackers and blaring loudspeakers beyond the permissible decibel level. Avoid blaring music around hospital and old age homes as loud noises can result in serious health conditions among the elderly and the sick. According to the Environment (Protection) Act, 1986, loudspeakers should not exceed 75 dB. Switch off all speakers after 10 pm.
Swap fairy lights for LED lights|
Small electric bulbs have replaced olden day earthen diyas as decoration, but fairy lights and bright incandescent bulbs consume a lot of electricity. Switching to LED string lights are during festivals would be a good idea. These string lights can also last for up to 10 years and your electricity bills would be much cheaper too.
Immerse idols in water tankers instead of water bodies|
Immerse eco-friendly idols in water tanks rather than lakes, river, and sea to reduce polluting and overcrowding water bodies during the festival.
3Rs-Reduce, Reuse and Recycle|
There are three key factors when thinking about how to recycle – The 3 R’s. The three R’s – reduce, reuse and recycle – all help to cut down on the amount of waste we throw away. Reduce is best way to manage waste. Reuse products in different ways. Recycling the Ganesh festival flowers and festival leftovers is another way to manage waste. Make natural color from flowers such as marigold and other festival leftovers can be used to make compost.
Cleanup the trash you leave behind|
Festivals are fun and a good way to celebrate as a community, but cleaning up after the festivities is equally important. Pick up all plastic and paper trash left behind after the immersion procession is over.
Form a group or team for celebrating Eco Friendly Ganesh festival in your neighborhood|
Spread awareness by forming a group or a team in your community. Teach your younger generation and others the good effects of celebrating eco friendly Ganesh Festival.
Keep your city clean and have a safe and happy Ganesh Chaturthi.
